1.) What was one take away that you learned from working in FYE?
The importance of collaboration and being resourceful!
2.) How did your experience in FYE prepare you for your first job after Salem State?
My first job after Salem State was working as an admissions counselor at Wentworth Institute of Technology. FYE exposed me to event planning as I was the grad in charge of advising Alpha Lambda Delta. In addition, FYE taught me how to be flexible when things don't go as planned. A lot of admissions is being able to be adapt to changes quickly, whether that means a last minute information session or a group visit coming into the office without warning. FYE taught me to be organized and how to handle stress with ease.
3.)What is your favorite memory/the best part of working in FYE?
The people! To this day, I am still friends with the other grads who worked in the office with me.
4.) What skills did you learn from working in FYE, how are they applicable to your current job.
My current role in recruitment relies heavily on my interpersonal and communication skills all of which were refined during my time in FYE.
5.) In What way(s) do you feel like FYE supported you in your growth throughout the HESA program?
Mathew was a phenomenal supervisor! He always made sure us grads felt as though we could go to him for advice and always supported our long term goals, whether or not they were directly related to the FYE.
6.) What is one piece of advice you would like to give a first year graduate student who is about to start their Graduate retention fellow in FYE?
Don't be afraid to ask questions! It is a supportive office that welcomes and values opinions. Ask lots of questions, embrace all the experiences, and enjoy it because before you know it it is time to graduate.
