FYRE PROGRAM COORDINATOR
Common reading programs have emerged as a powerful and highly impactful first-year experience at colleges and universities across the country. The idea is simple - reading the same book can bring students together as a community by providing a shared intellectual experience. While the act of reading a book over the summer is a solitary one, to full realize the potential and impact of such a program, additional structure is needed for both students and faculty/staff involved in engaging with students on the book and it’s central themes. The Salem State University FYRE program is unique in that a cross-campus committee comprised of faculty, staff, and students narrows the book choices each year down to a select few and then the entire university community votes on the final book In collaboration with the Faculty Fellow for FYRE, the graduate assistant will be responsible for assisting in all aspects of the program including benchmarking other common reading programs, developing support materials for faculty and stuff, running various processes connected to book selection and ordering, developing events and activities connected to the book/themes throughout the year, and helping assess the overall program. Duties/Description of the Position: The First Year Experience Office seeks a highly motivated Salem State University graduate student to work with the Faculty Fellow for the First Year Reading Experience (FYRE) and the FYE Office to coordinate and manage the FYRE program
