1.) What was one take away that you learned from working in FYE?
You can be fun, relatable, approachable, and professional at the same time.
2.) How did your experience in FYE prepare you for your first job after Salem State?
I was able to do many different things in FYE: student advising, student staff supervising, presenting at student success workshops, programming, etc. I learned so much from practicing.
3.)What is your favorite memory/the best part of working in FYE?
The people. Mathew is awesome, the grads are awesome, and the mentors and office assistants are awesome!
4.) What skills did you learn from working in FYE, how are they applicable to your current job.
The most important thing that I learned is to meet students at where they are. It is always important to listen, to find out what students need, before offering my suggestions.
5.) In what way(s) do you feel like FYE supported you in your growth throughout the HESA program?
I get to try different projects and learn different skills in a short amount of time. Whenever I am doing something that I haven’t done before, I always know that I come to Mathew and other Grads for help.
6.) What is one piece of advice you would like to give a first year graduate student who is about to start their Graduate retention fellow in FYE?
Do what you are afraid to do.
