Hello, my name is Alexandra Valdez/ I received my bachelor’s degree from Framingham State University in Psychology with a minor in sociology. My favorite part about working at FYE was the positive energy. Everyone who works in the office is friendly and makes the environment a great place to work. FYE assists first year students with everything-there is no question the office doesn’t answer. The well being and success of the student is always the goal. While working at FYE, I grew tremendously. I have been validated through my learning process at FYE. While becoming acclimated in the office, my colleagues were patient, encouraging and supporting every step of the way. The advice I would give a first year graduate student is to trust the process. Everything won’t come easy, but the process of learning will be worth it to your growth.
1.) What was one take away that you learned from working in FYE?
Working at FYE I learned many lessons! The most valuable one being able to engage with different professionals across campus that are involved with FYE.
2.) How is your experience in FYE preparing you for your first job after Salem State?
Working at FYE is preparing me for my first job by providing me the skills to be successful. Everything I have learned can be transferable to any functional area of my choosing. The multiple projects, the large scale programming, success coaching and supervising undergraduate staff, provide me with the experience to be a well rounded candidate during my job search.
3.) What is your favorite memory/best part of working in FYE thus far?
The knowledge I have gained is unmatched! I would not be able to find it with any other position! The other graduate students I worked with when I was a first year, have become my closest friends!
4.) What is one piece of advice you would like to give a first year graduate student who is about to start their Graduate retention fellow in FYE?Try your best, and if you don't know the answer, utilize your resource and ask for help!
